Lendemeriella tornoensis

Lendemeriella tornoensis (H. Magn.) (Syn. Caloplaca tornoensis) on  Andreaea blytii in a late snow area at Gistuskáidi (finnish lappland).   For a key to the genus of Lendemeriella see: Lee et al. 2024.  A New Lichenized Fungus, Lendemeriella luteoaurantia, with a Key to the Species of Lendemeriella. Tundra at Kevo, Finland

August 2023, bryological excursion to the tundra around Kevo subarctic research station. The area around kevo is still dominated by    Betula pubescens var. pumila and Pinus forest. Tundra starts with just a few meters up the hill across  Kevojärvi lake.  Jiesnnalvárri is a mountain peak ( ~ 300m) across the lake to the northwest of Kevo station. In the lower region, one can find mainly birch forest that gradually transitions to pine forest with the undergrowth consisting of Rhododendron tomentosum and occasional Juniperus communis . In the vicinity of the lake, there are a few small fens containing Sphagnum compactum, Sphagnum russowii, Sphagnum capillifolium and Drosera rotundifolia. Towards the tree line there are some small areas of late snow and some ponds. The tundra extending above the treeline is mainly dominated by lichens, especially Flavocetraria nivalis , Alectoria ochroleuca , Sphaerophorus globosus, Ophioparma ventosa . Tetralophozia setiformis

Tetralophozia setiformis is a specialist of cold, nutrient-poor habitats. Pelliaceae

The liverwort family Pelliaceae includes thalloid species which are mainly found in moist, shaded habitats such as stream banks and forest soils (Crandall-Stotler et al., 2009). Species like Pellia epiphylla are known for their simple thallus morphology and their ecological role in soil stabilization and moisture retention (Paton, 1999). Riccia

The genus Riccia comprises small, thalloid liverworts commonly found in moist or periodically wet habitats, such as muddy fields, riverbanks, and disturbed soils. Unlike many other liverworts, Riccia species are often adapted to temporary habitats and can rapidly colonize open ground. Their flat, rosette-forming thalli lack a distinct midrib and often exhibit a purplish underside due to anthocyanin pigments. Some species are considered pioneer organisms, playing a role in early succession and soil stabilization (Schuster, 1992). Lunularia cruciata

Lunularia cruciata: The Crescent-Cup Liverwort Lunularia cruciata belongs to the Marchantiales, a group of complex thalloid liverworts. It is the sole species in the family Lunulariaceae (Paton, 1999), easily recognized by its broad, green thallus and its unique crescent-shaped gemma cups. These cups produce gemmae , small clonal propagules that are dispersed by splashes of water (Paton, 1999; Grolle, 1983). Sphagnum magellanicum complex: S. divinum & S. medium

Both Sphagnum divinum and Sphagnum medium belong to the Sphagnum subgenus Sphagnum. For a key to S. divinum , S. medium and S. magellanicum , see   Hassel et al. 2018. S. divinum and medium can be hard to distinguish.
