About MossSoup

Hi, I'm Johannes, a biology student with a deep interest in the diversity and ecology of plants, and their interactions :) My fascination with mosses began when I wasn´t able to look for interesting vascular plants in winter and realized, how diverse the world of mosses around me actually is.

Bryophytes are among the oldest land plants, shaping ecosystems and occurring in almost every habitat. Yet they often go unnoticed, requiring a good eye and a hand lens (or microscope) to explore their miniature world.

What is MossSoup?

The name MossSoup comes from a cooking group during a bryology field trip.  In the blog I aim to highlight the often overlooked world of bryophytes and liverworts (and some lichens), sharing pictures and some thoughts about the ecology of mosses. I aim to make these fascinating organisms more accessible to a wider audience.

What You’ll Find Here

  • Species Spotlights: Descriptions and photos of different moss species, especially my favorites—Sphagnum mosses and the tiny pioneer species that are barely visible to the naked eye.

  • Field NotesObservations and impressions from field trips, mostly from Central Europe and various locations across the globe.

  • Ecological Perspectives: Insights into the role of mosses in ecosystems, their adaptations, and their interactions with other organisms, especially with parasiting fungi and lichen.

Feedback

I welcome feedback, corrections, and discussion! Species identification can be tricky, and I identify most mosses myself—so any corrections or insights are highly appreciated. Feel free to leave comments or ask questions.
